Niacinamide for Indian skin: what it does and how to use it

By the Seonvie editorial team · · Updated · 6 min

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 used in skincare to help skin look more even and smoother, and to support how the skin barrier feels. It suits most Indian skin tones when introduced slowly: low strength, patch tested, once a day.

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 used in skincare to help skin look more even, feel smoother and support a comfortable barrier. For Indian skin tones it is a sensible, gentle first active, as long as you start with a low strength and go slowly.

In short

  • Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, not an acid, and it is usually well tolerated.
  • It helps improve the look of uneven tone and rough texture, and supports barrier comfort.
  • Start low, patch test, and use it once a day.
  • It works best with daily sunscreen, especially if you are working on the look of marks.
  • Go slowly if your skin is reactive or you have a diagnosed skin condition.

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3. Skincare brands add it to serums, toners and moisturisers because it layers easily and rarely feels heavy. You can read more on the niacinamide ingredient page.

Unlike exfoliating acids, niacinamide does not work by peeling skin. That is one reason it often feels easier to live with in daily use.

What does niacinamide do for skin?

Niacinamide helps improve the look of uneven tone, supports how the skin barrier feels, and helps skin look smoother and more refined. These are cosmetic effects, and they build gradually.

In practice, people use it for:

  • A more even-looking tone, including the look of dullness and post-blemish marks.
  • Skin that feels more comfortable and less tight after cleansing.
  • A smoother-looking surface and less visible pores.
  • The look of balanced shine through the day.

None of this is instant, and results differ from person to person.

Deeper skin tones often show marks for longer after a breakout, a mosquito bite or a shaving nick. That is why an ingredient that helps skin look more even, without being harsh, is a useful part of many Indian routines. Gentle does not mean fast, though. Think in weeks and months, and judge results in the same light and without a filter.

Niacinamide also does not replace a moisturiser or sunscreen. It is one step in a routine, and it works best when the basics around it are steady.

How do I start using niacinamide?

Start with a low strength, patch test, and apply once a day. A patch test means putting a small amount on the inner forearm or behind the ear for a day or two before using it on your face.

  1. Cleanse your face and pat it dry or leave it slightly damp.
  2. Apply two or three drops of serum.
  3. Follow with moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.
  4. Stay at once a day for about two weeks before changing anything.

If skin stays calm, you can move to twice a day or a slightly stronger product. A higher percentage is not always better, and some skin simply feels warmer or tingly at higher levels.

How do I layer niacinamide with other products?

Apply niacinamide after cleansing and toning, before moisturiser. It pairs comfortably with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and centella asiatica, and most people can use it with sunscreen without any trouble.

If you also use a stronger active such as an exfoliating acid or retinol, add one new product at a time. Using them at different times of day, or on alternate evenings, is an easy way to keep skin comfortable. Our 4-step routine guide shows where each step sits.

Does niacinamide work for oily, humid-weather skin and dry skin?

Niacinamide suits both, but you use it differently. In humid cities such as Mumbai or Chennai, a light serum under a gel moisturiser is usually enough. In dry winters in the north, or in air-conditioned offices, layer it under a richer cream.

  • Oily or combination skin: a watery serum once or twice a day, with a light moisturiser.
  • Dry or dehydrated skin: use it under a ceramide moisturiser so skin stays comfortable. See ceramides in Indian weather.
  • Monsoon: keep layers light, and cleanse gently when skin feels sticky.

What should I expect, and who should be careful?

Expect subtle change over several weeks, not overnight results. Niacinamide helps improve the look of marks but does not remove them, and sun exposure can undo progress, so daily sunscreen is part of the plan.

Go slowly or speak to a doctor first if you:

  • Have very sensitive or reactive skin, or a diagnosed skin condition.
  • Have persistent acne or sudden changes in your skin.
  • Get redness, itching or burning after applying it. Stop and rinse off.

A brief flush or warmth in the first few uses can happen, especially at higher strengths or on skin that is already dry. If it fades quickly, drop to alternate days and try again. If it does not, stop. Pairing niacinamide with a simple moisturiser and avoiding several new products at once makes it much easier to tell what your skin is reacting to.

Seonvie, the Korean-inspired skincare brand for India, is developing the Glass Skin Serum with a niacinamide target of 5 to 10 percent. The final percentage will be confirmed at launch. Seonvie also publishes its approach on the science page.

Questions

Is niacinamide good for Indian skin tones?

Niacinamide is widely used on all skin tones, including deeper Indian skin. It helps skin look more even and smoother over time. Start with a low strength, patch test first, and use it once a day before moving up.

How much niacinamide should I start with?

Many people start with a low strength, around 2 to 5 percent, and see how skin feels over a couple of weeks. Higher strengths are not automatically better, and some skin gets flushed or tingly at higher levels.

Can I use niacinamide every day?

Most people can use a niacinamide serum once a day after cleansing, and later twice a day if skin stays comfortable. If skin feels tight, hot or itchy, cut back to alternate days or stop.

Can I use niacinamide with vitamin C or azelaic acid?

Usually yes, since niacinamide is a gentle ingredient. Introduce one new product at a time, use vitamin C or exfoliating acids at a different time of day if skin feels sensitive, and patch test each new step.

Will niacinamide fade dark spots?

Niacinamide helps improve the look of uneven tone, but it does not remove marks on its own and results vary. Daily sunscreen matters as much, because sun exposure can make marks look darker again.
