How to build a 4-step routine
By the Seonvie editorial team · · Updated · 5 min
A simple skincare routine has four steps: cleanse, hydrate, moisturise and protect. Morning uses all four, with sunscreen last. Evening is cleanse, hydrate and moisturise. Add at most one active at a time, patch test first, and adjust textures for humidity, AC and winter.
A good routine is one you will actually follow. Four steps are enough for most people. They are cleanse, hydrate, moisturise and protect.
This guide shows how each step works, what changes between morning and night, and how to adapt for Indian conditions. If you prefer a guided version, our routine builder walks you through a few questions.
In short
- Four steps are enough: cleanse, hydrate, moisturise, protect.
- Morning uses all four. Evening skips sunscreen.
- Add only one active at a time, and patch test first.
- Adjust textures for humidity, AC and winter, and wear sunscreen daily.
Step 1: cleanse
Cleansing removes sweat, oil, dust and sunscreen. The goal is clean skin that still feels comfortable.
- Use lukewarm water.
- Massage for about a minute, then rinse well.
- Pat dry. Do not rub.
If your skin feels tight or squeaky afterwards, the cleanser is probably too strong. The Azelaic Acid Gel Cleanser is in production. It contains an active, so patch test before regular use when it launches.
In humid cities and during monsoon, a thorough evening cleanse matters. Pollution and sweat build up through the day. In the morning, a gentle rinse or a mild cleanse is often enough.
Step 2: hydrate and prep
This is the toner or essence step. Apply it while skin is still slightly damp. Hydrating layers help skin feel supple and ready for what comes next.
Look for humectants such as poly-glutamic acid and tremella fuciformis polysaccharide. They draw water toward the skin.
Our Barrier Ceramide Toner is built for this step. Pat it in with clean palms. Do not use cotton pads unless you prefer them, as they absorb product.
You can layer a second thin coat if your skin feels dry. In a hot, humid month, one light layer is enough.
Step 3: moisturise
Moisturiser helps seal in the hydration from step 2. Skip it and the water you added can evaporate quickly, especially in AC rooms or dry northern winters.
Oily or combination skin still needs this step. Choose a lighter texture, not none at all.
- Summer and monsoon: a gel or lotion.
- Winter: a richer cream, especially at night.
- AC offices: a medium texture that stays comfortable through the day.
The Barrier Ceramide Moisturizer is made for this role. Ceramides are lipids found in the skin barrier, and they help skin feel supported.
Step 4: protect
Sunscreen is the one non-negotiable step. India has strong sun for most of the year, and UV exposure can continue on cloudy days, near windows and during short commutes. Sun exposure can also make dark marks look deeper.
- Apply it as the last step of your morning routine.
- Use enough to cover your face and neck.
- Reapply if you are outdoors for a long time, sweating, or swimming.
The SPF 50 Sunscreen will fill this step when it launches. Until then, choose a sunscreen you enjoy wearing, because you will use it more often.
Putting it together
Morning
- Cleanse. Rinse with water, or use a gentle cleanser.
- Hydrate. Toner or essence on damp skin.
- Moisturise. Light to medium, based on the weather.
- Protect. Sunscreen, every day.
Evening
- Cleanse. Remove sunscreen, sweat and pollution. If you wore a lot of sunscreen or makeup, cleanse twice.
- Hydrate. Toner or essence.
- Moisturise. A little richer than in the morning if your skin feels dry.
- Protect. Skip sunscreen at night. Your moisturiser is the final step.
The evening version is really a three-step routine. That is fine. Sunscreen is for daytime.
Optional: add one active
Once your four steps feel easy, you may want to add one active. An active is an ingredient meant to do more than hydrate, such as niacinamide, which helps skin look more even over time.
Add only one at a time. Here is how.
- Patch test first. Apply a small amount behind your ear or on your jaw for a few days.
- Start with two or three evenings a week.
- Increase slowly if your skin feels comfortable.
- Wait at least two weeks before judging the result or adding anything else.
Do not start an active during a stressful skin week, after sun exposure, or when skin is stinging. If in doubt, wait.
Adjusting for Indian conditions
Humid heat. Use lighter textures and keep layers thin.
AC all day. Do not skip hydration. Apply moisturiser in the morning.
Northern winters. Add a second hydrating layer and a richer cream.
Monsoon. Keep cleansing gentle and consistent.
Pigmentation concerns. Sun protection matters most. Consistency over months helps skin look more even. Talk to a doctor about persistent or sudden dark patches.
Common mistakes
- Using too many new products at once.
- Skipping moisturiser because skin feels oily.
- Washing the face many times a day.
- Forgetting sunscreen on cloudy or indoor days.
- Expecting visible change in a few days. Give a routine at least four weeks.
When to see a doctor
If you have acne, eczema, rosacea, persistent redness or any ongoing skin concern, a doctor can guide you. A routine supports skin comfort. It is not a replacement for medical care.
Start simple
Four steps, done steadily, are worth more than a long shelf. Begin with the basics, watch how your skin feels, and change one thing at a time.

Questions
What is a simple 4-step skincare routine?
The four steps are cleanse, hydrate, moisturise and protect. Cleanse gently, apply a toner or essence to damp skin, seal with a moisturiser, and finish with sunscreen in the morning. Evenings skip sunscreen.
What order should I apply skincare products?
Go from lightest to richest. Cleanse first, then water-based toner or essence, then serum if you use one, then moisturiser. Sunscreen is the final morning step, applied after moisturiser.
Do I need sunscreen every day in India?
Yes. Sun is strong for most of the year, and UV exposure continues on cloudy days and near windows. Apply sunscreen as the last morning step, use enough for face and neck, and reapply if outdoors for long.
How do I add an active to my routine?
Add one at a time. Patch test first on a small area for a few days, begin with two or three evenings a week, and wait at least two weeks before judging the result. Stop if skin stings or turns red.
Can oily skin skip moisturiser?
No. Oily-feeling skin can still be short on water. Choose a lighter gel or lotion texture instead of skipping the step. Moisturiser helps seal in the hydration you added and keeps skin comfortable in AC and heat.
